How To Choose A Profitable Topic

Choosing a blog topic can be such an
overwhelming task that many aspiring
entrepreneurs never move past it. 
Gone are the days when you could just start
writing about your interests, use keywords to drive traffic to your blog, and turn it all into a profitable business.

Over the last decade, I’ve coached thousands of bloggers who have had varying degrees of success. By observing which ones go on to earn six-figure incomes, I
now have a good grasp of what criteria matter most when choosing a profitable topic.

When choosing a blog topic, there are two questions you need to ask:

#1: Is there money being made by people/businesses in your niche?

 
#2: Can you see yourself years from now still interested in the subject you are
about to start a blog about? 

Topic selection is all about finding the sweet spot between something you care about enough to get really good at AND something other people are prepared to spend money on.

What Do Money-Making Bloggers All Have In
Common?

The graduates of my coaching programs who have gone on to earn $100,000 or
more all share a few key secrets:

    • They were in it for the long term. They love what they’re writing about and don’t lose interest in their subject.

 
    • They were not blogging just for the money. They earn money from blogging because they’ve mastered their subject and they thrive on sharing their ideas with other people. People pay the most money for the best ideas.

 
    • They stopped looking at “topics” and started looking at people’s behaviors. More specifically, they looked at the problems troubling people enough that they would actively seek out and pay for a solution.

    • They were either a master in their subject or they were willing to become one. If you write about something you have lived, you will have a better understanding of what your audience wants and needs.

The Four Money Making Mega-Niches

Almost all successful information businesses fall into one of four “mega-niches” – a term coined by multi-millionaire marketer Eben Pagan.

The top three mega niches are:

    • Dating and Relationships
    • Health and Wellness
    • Money and Finance

These are the three areas of our lives where humans spend most of their time, energy, and money. Our primary needs for health, food, shelter, love and recognition are all met within these three mega-niches. 

If you can help people recover from a chronic injury or illness, attract a partner or get out of debt, you can make money online. 

The fourth money-making mega niche is Irrational Passions.

Now that society has moved beyond struggling for survival towards rampant consumerism, we readily spend money on things we don’t need. We don’t need sports, fashion, cars, travel, electronics, and entertainment but a lot of people are prepared to spend plenty of money on them.

Why Competition Is A Good Thing

Don’t try to find a niche with no competition so you can be first to market.

 
Competition is a sign of potential. When other people are operating in a market and they are making money that means you have the potential to do the same.

What you need to do is find a popular, proven money-making subject, and then be first with your unique methods and ideas about that subject.

Your competition can also be a source of traffic to your blog. One of the key
marketing techniques I teach in my courses is to get your content published on
other blogs and websites.

If no one else is succeeding in your industry that’s a bad thing. Not only do you
need their audience to help build your own, but you need to know there is money
to be made.

Follow The Money

One of the best ways to find a winning blog topic is to follow the money.

Browse through online stores like Amazon, eBay and Alibaba.com to see what is currently selling.

See what other money-making bloggers and authors are wri8ng about and start a blog that covers a sub-niche of their topic.
